The gateway to Cragside and known as the 'capital of Coquetdale', Rothbury is a small town nestled in the Coquet valley boasting numerous independant shops, cafe's, a gallery and several pubs. The wonderful Cragside House and gardens sits 1 mile to the north-east and is not to be missed. Rothbury is the final town along the The Saint Oswald's Way (Coquet section) before the rout detours south. However, Upper Coquetdale is a stunning walking and cycling destination with other small and charming hamlets along the way. Check out Harbottle with it's ruined castle and spectacular Drake Stone, or the tiny Alwinton - gateway to numerous walks in the upper Coquet valley, and Holystone with The Lady's well and the marvelous Holystone north wood , alive with spring time bird song. Rothbury is 11 miles from Felton and visitors should be sure to check out the beautiful Brinkburn Priory along the way.
