The Sound of a Landscape. The Northumberland Coast in Art, Sound and Poetry.

The Closest Thing to Heaven

The Closest Thing to Heaven is a unique photographic record of the Newcastle music scene in the 1970s and 80s. Featuring a mixture of professional and amateur photos capturing the energy and DIY ethos of the bands and artists that played to the city’s loyal crowds. Despite the many social upheavals and economic recession in Britain during this period, there were still people keen to go out any night of the week. The atmosphere of this scene is captured by many of the shots taken from within the crowd of local bands such as Prefab Sprout. The Kane Gang and Arthur 2 Stroke. As well the music, this book features some of the important venues, labels, art and people that were major part of Newcastle’s music culture at this time. Covering various genres including post punk and electronic music, as well as more tradition rock, this photo book will bring back memories of a carefree youth that for some was ‘The Closest Thing to Heaven’.

Jon Carter BRITISH TRUST FOR ORNITHOLOGY
Avant-garde sound artist, ornithologist and author MiE (Mike) Fielding outlines the sorry tale of the UK's catastrophic loss of biodiversity and particularly it's bird life over the past forty years. Fielding offers an explanation as to why this has happened and uncovers some pretty damning statistical evidence that shows how consumerism and greed has transformed a once 'green and pleasant land' into one of the least biodiverse country's on Earth.
The story is manifested through a combination of text, thought provoking photographs and an accompanying electronic sound art composition of 44 minutes made entirely from Fielding's own bird sound recordings, providing a chilling back drop to a child's rendition of John Clare's poem 'The Mores' , which although written in 1820, offers a perfect lament to a present world obsessed by landlordism, materialism and greed at the expense of the environment. CD mixing and production designed for use with headphones.
