Boulmer

Just north of Alnmouth lies the tiny fishing village of Boulmer. The site is probably best viewed as part of a day trip that perhaps takes in the Alnmouth estuary and Craster

Waders Galore

Take the minor road north from the roundabout in Alnmouth. At the first T junction turn right, and this road leads to Boulmer. An excellent view of the bay can be enjoyed from the rear of the Fishing Boat Inn (Food served - entrance through the pub).

Has had many rarities over the years ,hoopoe amongst others , but is best for waders on the incoming tide.Dunlin, redshank, curlew sandpiper and little stint on migration,, bar-tailed godwit can usually be seen, with ringed plover, grey plover and other shorebirds. Gulls and terns will also frequent the seaweeds and shallow waters of the bay. Rock pools will show purple sandpiper and kingfisher in the Winter. Check the shore areas of seaweed for white wagtail, wheatear etc and the bushes and trees along the lane to Craster for other migrants . There are often gull roosts in the winter flooded areas and parties of twite , reed bunting and tree sparrow. The rough grassland just north of the village on the coastal path can produce short-eared owl.

Always interesting.

Birds you may see at Boulmer

Boulmer has something of interest all year round. Winter is probably the most productive. The field opposite the fishing boat inn often has large a large gull roost, with many wading birds on the shoreline.
