The pretty Northumberland village of Bamburgh.

Bamburgh

Lying in the shadow of it's magnificent castle, the coastal village of Bamburgh is situated just north of Seahouses and south of Lindisfarne. With miles of stunning beaches, gift shops, pubs and the castle, Bamburgh is also the site of the Grace Darling museum. which tells the story of Grace, a lighthouse keeper's daughter and her participation in the rescue of survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838, heroism which brought her national fame. The paddlesteamer ran aground on the Farne Islands which lie oppoisite the village and nine members of the crew were saved. She is buried in the churchyard of St Aidan's Church, Bamburgh. The Monument to her was completed in 1842. It represents a sleeping effigy of her holding an oar, and lies to the north of her grave at the western edge of the churchyard so it would be visible to passing seafarers. Bamburgh is 25 miles north of Felton via the A1, however a more scenic route is via the Northumberland coastal route, where visitors could also enjoy Warkworth, Alnmouth, Boulmer, Craster etc.
